CULTURE
Built in 1908, the Abbeville Opera House hosts 45 weekends of live theater throughout the year. Abbeville County is also the site of many annual festivals and events, including the Spring Festival and Garden Show, the Ware Shoals Catfish Feastival, a Dickens Christmas and historic home tours. Much of Abbeville County is a nature lovers paradise. Outdoorsmen enjoy hunting, fishing and camping in a beautiful setting.
Located in the idyllic academic village of Due West, Erskine College is ranked nationally for its academics. Ninety-nine percent of Erskine graduates who apply to medical school are admitted and ninety-five percent of the graduates are employed within months of graduation. The $7.5 million Daniel-Moultrie Science Center and $2 million Bowie Arts Center facilitate higher learning. Erskine is completely fiber optic and wireless, another technology hallmark. A $41 million campaign is now underway which includes $10 million in dorm renovations.
The Abbeville County Center of Piedmont Technical College brings quality higher education a few miles closer to residents of Abbeville County. The Center is a state-of-the art facility where students may take part in credit or non-credit courses in a traditional classroom setting, via satellite or two-way video. Most student services are also provided at the Center including financial aid, placement testing, career counseling and registration. Students may also pay fees and buy books at the Abbeville Center.
Within two hours drive of Abbeville County are some of the nations premier research universities: Clemson University (Time magazines "2000 Public College of the Year"), University of South Carolina, Medical University of Georgia, University of Georgia, Emory University and Georgia Tech.
The town of Calhoun Falls will soon be home to an upscale resort at beautiful Lake Russell. The resort will feature an 18-hole Tom Jackson-designed golf course, vacation and year-round homes, marina, stores and restaurant.
LOCATION
Located within one hour of Abbeville County is the growing metropolitan area of Greenville-Spartanburg with its Bi-Lo Center, Peace Center and revitalized downtown that features an eclectic collection of restaurants, microbreweries, and coffee houses. Abbeville County is also one hour from Augusta National, home of the Masters Golf Tournament. Just a few hours south, the famed South Carolina beaches provide an escape to paradise. A short drive north are the breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains and the world-renown Biltmore Estate.
